Ok it is quickly approaching my daughters 4th birthday. Here is the problem she seems to have this appendage that protrudes from here mouth. Many parents would know this as a binki. I had talked her into giving it up during the day for almost 6 months then her daddy got laid off of work and was home more. I don't know if this caused a problem or if she just got a way with more because he was home. Now the binki is always with her if not she is very upset almost frantic she says I LOVE MY BINKI and it loves my mouth. We thought this was pretty cute for a while but the dentist did not think so. If she doesn't have her binki at night she suffers from night terrors the doctor said she would out grow these but if she has her binki she doesn't have them. We even tried leaving the binki at home when we went on vacation to Bear Lake good thing my hubby had one in his overnight case or we probably would have been thrown out of our hotel for out sweet daughter woke up screaming and wouldn't quit for over an hour. So how do we get rid of this appendage that is always attached to her mouth without the screaming tantrums. Yes some of you parents out there know just what I mean when it comes to a little girl she can scream and scream until blood pours out of your ears and you go deaf :) especially if you know my sweet daughter. I would appreciate any advice that I could get since out of all of my children she is the only one that ever even had an interest in the binki. Hugs to all Ellie

Much Needed Advice

With both of my kids they loved their binkies too. One of them even had one for her mouth and one to hold in her hand while she slept. I weaned mine off by only letting them have them at naptimes, then bedtime and eventually not at all. Though since Alyssa is a little older I might just go cold turkey. Note: Gear yourself up emotionally,it will be a HORRIBLE week!! She will cry & cry and cry, but eventually she will adjust(truly, she will) and you will enjoy less dentist bills. :) You may try letting her pick out a new snuggle (blankie, stuffed animal) to help her cope since the binkie is such a comfort to her. Another idea is to cut off the end of the bink a little each day so it eventually loses it's ability to be sucked on and she may just throw it away herself out of frustration that it doesn't "work" anymore. :) Good luck & Be Strong! You can do this!
I would take her to the store and tell her that the binki is going to hurt her teeth, it is no longer a "good" binki. Make the binki sound as if it has turned bad, and let her pick out something else to replace it, a doll, an item that may ward off scary dreams. But let her pick out the item and let her know it is going to replace the binki! I'll go with you if you need and be an outside person she can't "persuade"! Have her be a big girl and bag up the binki's and then get rid of them in a "happy" way... like tie them to a balloon and let go, or take them to the d i or something that isn't like the loud garbage man that comes.. I would let her count down 3 days until she gets to say good bye let her know that on "that" day, binki has to go, we blame everything dental related to "sugar bugs" and when you get big enough, no more sippie's etc, because sugar bugs will start to eat holes in your teeth.. let me know if I can help!!!
try cutting holes in them. Bigger & bigger until she doesn't like them. You can also soak them in something horrible tasting.
Ellie,
We cut the bulby part off of Maxie's while he was sleeping, so when he woke up and went to pop it in his mouth, it dropped down into his lap. We all said, "OH NO! It's broken!" He asked about it a couple of times, but we gave it to him and reminded him that it was broken. We got rid of every single other one from the house, the car, the diaper bag, etc. We were lucky enough to NEVER have to deal with any tantrums associated with the broken binky! Good luck, chica! Miss & love ya!
